    DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
    Melesio Rodriguez (1932-present):
Melesio was born in Taxco, Mexico in 1932 and has worked in silver for more than 70 years. In 1948, at age 16, he began an apprenticeship with Margot Van Voorhies Carr at her “Margot de Taxco” workshop. Margot was recently divorced from Antonio Castillo and had previously designed for Los Castillo. Her creations became wildly popular and the likes of John Wayne and Lana Turner were among her Hollywood clients. Rodriguez honed his silversmith skills to become a Maestro and Foreman of her shop, eventually overseeing a staff of more than 280 artisans. He also collaborated with Sigi Pineda for over a year on the creation of Margot's most famous design "The Silver & Enamel Snake" which won them the most prestigious Taxco jewelry award "El Galardon" in 1954. Unfortunately, Margot became insolvent and closed her doors in 1976. As payment, she gave her molds to her top employees. Afterwards, Melesio opened his own workshop in Taxco where he has been actively producing jewelry for more than 40 years. It is worth noting that while the design may be the same, no two “mold” silver/enamel pieces are ever exactly alike when it comes to the finished creation as all the enamel work is done by hand.
