Description

1883 "NO CENT" LIBERTY NICKEL MS 36 CRISP AND LUSTROUS WITH NICE GOLD TONING.
This Iconic First-Year issue of the Liberty Head ("V") Nickle was the cause of much concern for the U.S. Mints when it was discovered that counterfeiters were turning these nickles into gold pieces due to the lack of the word "Cents" on the coin. It simply had a roman numeral "V" on the reverse which could mean five of anything! Known as the "Racketeer" nickle the U.S. quickly stopped the confusion (and crime) by recalling the coin and changing the mint dies to include the word "Cents" on the reverse. This is a near perfect MS 63 example of that very "Racketeer" Nickle
